Soundtrack to F451

If Fahrenheit 451 was going to be made into an upcoming feature film, what song do you think would best exemplify one of the themes or motifs that we've discussed in class? What connections can you make between the lyrics of the song and the theme or motif of the book? Why would you pick this song to be on the soundtrack--does it fit in with setting/plot/emotion of the book?

Paste a video to your song.

I chose the song Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys. I chose this song because the lyrics can relate to books being burned, specifically the lyric "This girl is on fire." I would pick this song for the movie during a scene that Montag is burning the old lady's house and all of her books because it is a dramatic song and that was a dramatic scene.

I chose the song Set Fire to the Rain by Adele. I chose this song because the lyrics connect to the plot of the story. In the story books are put up in flames by firefighters. Instead of putting out fires they start them just like how the lyrics say "I set fire to the rain". I would put this song in the soundtrack for the part when Montag burns Beatty.

  4. I chose the song I'm In Here by Sia. I chose this song because the lyrics say "I'm in here, can anybody see me? Can anybody help? I'm in here, a prisoner of history, can anybody help?" I feel that this song relates to pretty much everyone in the society that are not happy with their lives. They feel trapped inside themselves because they are not allowed to think about things. They are controlled by the government so that also makes them feel trapped. They know that they are sad on the inside but they do not know how to express it. This song fits in with the emotion of the story.

  5. The song I chose was Easy Way Out by The Plain White T's. I think this song fits in with the way Montag thinks after books have changed his opinions. The song is about not wanting to take the easy way out and following the crowd. One of the lyrics is "They'll never know what life is about so don't be like them, don't take the easy way out... They'll wait till someone figures it out", and this kind of describes how Montag feels about the people in this society after he starts thinking for himself.

  6. The song I would choose for the soundtrack would be "Girl on Fire". I chose this song because, in the story they burn the old lady and all the other people that hide or hoard books. That's why i would pick this song. .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZw2CB_Ir_w

  7. I would choose "Meet Me Halfway" by The Black Eyed Peas, because I think this is how Montag felt about Clarisse. Though there was never any mention of a "love connection" between the two, it was evident that Montag had feelings for Clarisse. Regardless of those feelings were on a "love" type of basis, Montag had feelings for her. After she and her family disappeared, Montag missed her. He actually thought about her. In fact, he was more concerned with Clarisse than his own wife. The lyrics say, "I want you so bad; that's my only wish." After Clarisse and her family were taken away, I could tell Montag wanted her back. He actually missed her.

This is another song that I felt was comparable to the book, F451. The song is "Holy Grail" by Jay Z featuring Justin Timberlake. This song is resembles Montag and Mildred's relationship. The song is basically describing a love-hate type of relationship, and I think that's what Montag and Mildred shared. Justin says, "Had my laundry in the streets, dirty or clean, give it up for fame; and I still don't know why I love you so much." Both Montag and Mildred wanted to have attention, and as you could see, they were so technology-crazed, that they would do anything for it. Also, I don't think Montag didn't love Mildred at all. As far as we know, they've been together for quite some time. I think if Montag truly doesn't have feelings for her, he would simply leave her. End of story.

  8. The song I would chose is "Radioactive" by Imagine Dragons. I would choose this song because of the looming threat of nuclear war hanging over Montag's society. It talks about waking up in the ashes of the old society. "Welcome to the new age" Montag and the hobos are going to help create a new, better society from the old one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeD_VvTFvac

  9. The song I would choose the song "The Big Mistake" by You Me and Everyone We Know. The song pretty much describes everything thats wrong with society in today's world. It talks about how television gets us to tune out and how our country deals with war. The line "I've made a big mistake and I'll be paying for it." could reference Montag getting caught after reading books.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rsUWm6TxNso (I apologize for the profanity on the album cover)

This song is called "Sleep" by Citizen. The line "Do you sleep anymore? Do you sleep anymore?" fits how most of the people can't sleep and have to resort to take sleeping pills. The line "I'm getting sick and tired of the smile that I fake every day" fits how Clarisse makes Montag realize that he isn't happy and the happiness that he had was like a mask that he doesn't want anymore. The line "I would love to be patient, but I just won't wait" can describe how Montag wants to know what can possibly be so great about books and he tries to figure it out but becomes quickly impatient. The two lines "I would love to speak my mind, but I can't think straight" and "And all this time I sit around and think, but there's nothing to say" is a great description of how the people of Montag's society are brainwashed into not being able to think freely of speak there mind and even when Montag tries to think and understand books, he just can't. The lines "I would love to feel alive again, but I'm not used to change" and "And I would love to feel alive again, but I guess that can wait" fit that Montag is changing and he wants it to be better and he wants to learn and be alive. It also fits because he has to wait for the society to be ready before they can make the change of reading books again.
This song really fits several aspects of the story.

  11. The song I chose was Burn It Down by Linkin Park. "We're building it up to burn it down. We cant wait to burn it to the ground," reminds me of how eager Beatty was to burn down books and buildings. I think it relates to the theme of burning things.

I think the song "Grapevine Fires" by Death Cab for Cutie really represents a part of the book. This can represent the people in the society, like Faber or Mildred, that were left for dead and knew that they would die. It also includes the symbol fire, which can represent destruction and loss of many cherished items. I would pick this song because it can express the fears and emotions that were pushed aside by those who lived in the society.

I chose the song, "The Loney by Christina Perri" because it speaks of a the fear of being who you really are and as the intro to the chorus states, "Im the ghost of a girl who i want to be most...the shell of a girl i used to know...". This plays into what Mildred and Montag are expirencing and maybe even Clarisse. This song is about them trying to break out of their shells-or in Mildred's case stay INSIDE-but the difficulty rate of doing so. I also think the song "Survivor by Destiny"s Child" would pit in where Montag is running away. This song symbolizes why he no longer needs Mildred to survive and be happie and how he will get through what is happening and no matter "Im a survivor; Im not going to give up; Im not going to stop; Imma work harder". This songs shows Montag's strength to keep going no matter what gets in his way. He WILL survive this.

  14. The song that I think and feel that would be appropriate to use in the soundtrack of Fahrenheit 451 is "Motherless Child" by Matthew Perryman Jones. Okay, I get that the title of the song, "Motherless Child" is a bit strange, but the actual lyrics of the song is what makes it perfect for Fahrenheit 451. In this song, some of the lyrics are, "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child, just long way from home." I think this part of the lyrics mean that he feels as if he doesn't have a family and he has no home. The person doesn't fit in and that is exactly how Montag feels. He lost his wife. He lost his home. He has nowhere to turn to, except for the people past the railroads.
"Sometimes I feel like I'm almost gone, just long way from my home," Montag feels as if he doesn't truly know who he is. Montag is still learning of who he is as a person and as he is trying to discover himself, he feels apart of him is gone.
"True believer, just a long way from home," Montag is now turning into a believer of books and he wants to support books, but he can't do that with Beatty bothering him.
"Why do I wander and why do I run? Why do I wander so far away home?" The singer of the song is asking himself why is he running? Why is he leaving his home? Why is he wandering from his home? This reminds me like Montag, because he is forced to leave his home and he is forced to wander and run to protect himself in order to find the place past the railroad tracks.
I would personally used this song for when Montag is running away and hiding from the other firemen and from the hound. I would use it when he is running from the car trying not to get killed and hiding from other people. I think this song would be very interesting to use in Fahrenheit 451, because although the lyrics are short and repeat, they mean so much and I am sure Montag can relate to those lyrics.

  15. Songs that I would choose for a Fahrenheit 451 Soundtrack would be:
    1) Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
    2) Fire- The Jimi Hendrix Experience
    3) Great Balls of Fire- Jerry Lee Lewis
    4) Burning For You- Blue Oyster Cult
    5) We Didn't Start The Fire- Billy Joel
    6) Light Em Up - Fall Out Boy
    7) Firehouse- KISS

I chose this list of songs because they involve two types of burning. Physical and mental styles of burning. In songs like "Light My Fire", "Firehouse", and "Fire", they talk about the physical effects of burning. Such tunes could be used during a scene when the firemen are burning books, or when Captain Beatty is being burned alive on Montag's lawn. Other songs, like "Burning For You", are used to symbolize a different kind of burning. In the case when Montag thinks about how he has little to no love for Mildred, it is a mental burning of his memories of love and romance with her.

  16. The song I would choose is "Breakaway" by Kelly Clarkson because its talking about wanting to transform and become someone different from everyone else.It states, "wanted to belong here but something felt so wrong here so I'd pray
I could breakaway...And I'll make a wish, take a chance, make a change." Like in the book, Montag goes through transformation and changes during the story. He eventually starts doing what he wants to do andwhat is right rather than to stick to the standards in the society. He starts reading books which was unexpected for their society and he takes the chance to make a change by trying to create a new, different, and better society along with the intellectuals.

  17. If Fahrenheit 451 was turned into an upcoming feature film I think the song that would best fit the theme would be "Pompeii" by Bastille. This song would be perfect for the soundtrack because the lyrics fit the storyline so well. "Many days fell away with nothing to show." This lyric reminds me of Granger's grandfather's philosophy. "And the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love." The underlying misery of the society made it slowly crumble. This song really reminds me of Fahrenheit 451 and I think that it would be great for a soundtrack. http://youtu.be/F90Cw4l-8NY

  18. The song I chose is "Sellout" by Never Shout Never. This song talks about "selling" ones self out to the facade of society. I feel like this song fits Montag after he realizes that he has been blind to the reality of his world. Some of the lyrics that fit this would be "I sold my soul to the corporation / they know me better than I know myself." This is like how Montag was just an empty shell who didn't even think of his own happiness; rather, Montag blindly follows what his society tells him will make him happy. Another lyric I find appropriate is "I got a problem with the way you think / that you can program me like a machine." This line also highlights the theme of technology. In the society in the book, all the people's problems were solved by technology - like whe Mildred over doses. I feel like this song has a powerful feel, and stands against censorship like the novel does. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVKhvEQKaUU

  19. If I had to choose a song to put on the Fahrenheit 451 soundtrack, I would choose 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' by Green Day. The song is about the lead singer's dad dying and when his mother comes to check up on him after the funeral, he simply responds "wake me up when September ends". This song portrays wanting to hide from something and forgetting it ever happened. I think this goes along with the theme of how the society is so oblivious to what is happening around them, how they just go with the flow. When someone dies, for example, they don't wast time mourning over the person; they just get right back on with their lives, almost forgetting it ever happened.

  20. If Fahrenheit 451 was going to be made into an upcoming feature film, I would choose the song 'Light Em Up' by Fall Out Boy. I would want to use this song specifically for when Montag completely lights Beatty up with the flame thrower, the lyrics are "I"m on fireeeee" and Beatty could be saying this as he's being lit up. Also the song talks about ashes which makes me think of the ash from the burned books. The lyrics of this song relates to the setting of the book.

  21. The song I would choose to be part of the soundtrack would be "The Phoenix" by Fall Out Boy because of a few lyrics; "Strike a match and I'll burn you to the ground, We are the jack-o-lanterns in July, setting fire to the sky". This reminds of the old Montag burning the houses without any care in the world. "Hey young blood! Doesn't it feel like our time is running out? I'm gonna change you, like a remix, Then I'll raise you, like a phoenix" This reminds me of a few different things, one when Montag feels like his generation is being destroyed by technology and they only have a certain amount of time before the war starts. Two Montag wants to change the world and make it better. But before he can change anything the nuclear bomb destroys it. So Montag believes that it is his job to rebuild it from its ashes.

  22. I chose the song "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon. In this song, he sings about the beautiful Kodak pictures. When Montag meets Clarisse, he is amazed about how she lives and sees such beautiful things. After he met Clarisse, he started reflecting about himself and his society. He finally sees the beauty that comes from reading books and questions if what he does is right

  23. Two song that I think that would go good for the sound for the soundtrack of Fahrenheit 451 would be (the clean versions of course) of "Not Afraid" and "Won't Back Down" by Eminem. I think these were good songs because they talk about not giving up no matter what other people think. They also talk about doing what they want and not letting people get in the way of them. To me this represents Montag and him wanted to read books and change how their government/society, and he won't let Beatty or anyone get in his way. Montag doesn't matter what it takes he wants to read books and change the society.

  24. The song that most exemplifies Fahrenheit 451 in my opinion is "Firework" by Katy Perry. I think the line "Do you ever feel like a waste of space?" speaks for most of Montag's society, it is just a matter if time until they come out of their shell and stand up for what is right to them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9p_wNe9OtG8

I chose the song Radioactive because in my opinion it relates to the story and the future. It has to do with society changing as well as the way people think, It has to do with the nuclear problems Montag faces.

    ReplyDelete
  26. http://youtu.be/mCYfw2CyUdA I chose Breath By Breaking Benjamin because its about change and Montag changed from the beginning of the story when he hated books and liked to burn them to the end where he loved books and was willing to give up his life for them.

  27. I picked the song Numb by Linkin Park. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXYiU_JCYtU I chose this song because it's just about a person saying that they have lost themselves because of what someone else has done to them. It's a song about how they have lost all the things that make themselves different. It applies to fahrenheit 451 by the government not allowing the people to have individuality at all and forcing them to become other people that they didn't really choose to be.

  28. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvgZkm1xWPE

I picked Viva La Vida by Coldplay. I Feel that the song best exemplifies the death of the old Montag, and the birth of the new one. I feel that this song would be perfect to go along with the beginning of the final chapter, since it is about Montag completely changing, and his eyes suddenly being opened.

I think the song Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd would be apart of the soundtrack because it represents society today and the society in Fahrenheit 451. The song talks about thought control and how we're just "bricks in the wall" meaning our life has no meaning. We go to school, graduate, get into debt, watch tv, get a job, get married and then die. It seems society has fallen in a constant state of repetitive action and no one seems to think about things anymore. Everyone is mentally controlled by the media and technology.

  30. I picked the song City by Hollywood Undead. www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx4g3Zz45cA‎
This song is about the how the world is coming to an end and everyone is being ruled by the government. They talk about how you have an objection they will make you take a pill to sleep. Then how when the people burning the city (like the firemen) are burning women and children all the building because it is there job and they have no choice.

  31. The song I would chose for part of a Fahrenheit 451 would be Eyes on Fire by Blue Foundation. I chose this song because it speaks of destruction between a couple, and surviving. Which is pretty much his and Mildred's relationship. Even though it speaks of destruction between a couple, it also speaks of altercation as a whole; fire, falling in general. Therefore, Eyes on Fire would be a great fit for certain scenes of a F451 movie.

If I had to chose a song for the soundtrack of the Fahrenheit 451 movie, I would choose the song "Burn it Down" by Linkin Park. I chose this because it represents the theme of society destroying itself. "We're building it up, to break it back down" these lyrics could symbolize how the society thinks it is building itself up, and becoming so great, when really, it is just setting up for it to destroy itself.

The song i would choose is "Its the end of the world" by REM. As the words go "Its the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine" this describes the society in f451 because most of the people are accepting of what has happened to everyone and they don't care.

  34. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8KQmps-Sog
The song I would choose is "Uprising" by Muse. One of the lyrics is,"They'll try to, push drugs that keep us all dumbed down And hope that, we will never see the truth around", which REALLY reminded me of the sleeping pills that Mildred and her friends take so they won't feel emotions. Another lyric is,"And endless red tape to keep the truth confined", which also reminded me of censorship.

  35. I choose the song "Take A Walk" by Passion Pit. It explains how he is not living a wonderful life but he decides that he needs to just take a walk get away from the things around him just like how Montag decided to run away and get away from the life he was living. http://youtu.be/dZX6Q-Bj_xg

  36. The song I chose as a representation of Fahrenheit 451 is Believer by American Authors. When you initially listen to the song it's very happy, it talks about getting through and believing in a better tomorrow. F451, for me, was all about the rebirth of a society, but more than that, it was the rebirth of free thinking and intelligence.
The first few verses say "I'm just a believer, that things will get better, some can take it or leave it, but I don't wanna let it go" and then later continues "I'm a little bit sheltered, I'm a little bit scared, I'm a little bit nervous, I'm goin' nowhere".
It's so relevant to the story because the whole of Montag's idea is a risk. Everyone up to that point has left the situation to worsen but Montag won't let go of what he knows is right. He's nervous and scared but that's what makes it worthwhile. Everything important is the thing hardest to do. He's taking this risk for the belief in a better tomorrow.

  37. The song that I think is best is Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. The reason I would choose that song is because I think it represents Mongtag changing into a new person. Another reason is that it shows how the old world has to fade away and Montag and the hobos need to rebuild a new city.
